AI-Assisted Engineering

Purpose

This Standard defines how Artificial Intelligence participates in engineering activities performed under AAOE.

AI augments engineering work by assisting humans throughout the engineering lifecycle while operating under human governance.

Standard

AI systems may participate in engineering activities throughout the software lifecycle.

AI participation shall operate within the governance established by AAOE Standards.

Human accountability remains unchanged regardless of the degree of AI assistance.

Principles

AI-Assisted Engineering shall:

  • augment human engineering
  • improve engineering productivity
  • improve engineering quality
  • preserve engineering governance
  • preserve traceability
  • remain transparent
  • remain reviewable
  • remain technology independent

AI Capabilities

AI systems may assist with:

  • Requirements Analysis
  • Specification Drafting
  • Architecture Proposals
  • UX Design Support
  • Design System Assistance
  • Code Generation
  • Code Review
  • Testing
  • Documentation
  • Refactoring
  • Migration
  • Knowledge Retrieval
  • Implementation Reporting

Participation does not imply autonomous approval.

Human Responsibilities

Humans remain responsible for:

  • Engineering Governance
  • Engineering Decisions
  • Architecture Approval
  • Risk Acceptance
  • Compliance
  • Final Approval
  • Release Approval

Human accountability shall not be delegated.

Engineering Workflow

Engineering Intent

Human + AI Collaboration

Engineering Artifact

Human Review

Architecture Review

Approval

AI participation may occur at multiple stages of the workflow.

Transparency

Engineering artifacts should identify when AI materially contributed to their creation.

AI-generated work shall remain reviewable by humans.

Engineering decisions shall remain explainable.

Traceability

AI-assisted engineering should remain traceable through:

  • Specifications
  • Work Orders
  • Implementation Reports
  • Architecture Reviews
  • ADRs

AI participation shall not reduce engineering traceability.

Exceptions

Organizations may restrict AI participation in regulated or sensitive engineering activities.

Any restrictions should be explicitly documented.

Relationship to Human-Governed Engineering

This Standard operationalizes STD-0008 — Human-Governed Engineering.

AI operates within governance established by humans.

Relationship to Architecture Reviews

Architecture Reviews remain responsible for evaluating engineering artifacts regardless of whether they were created by humans, AI, or through collaboration.

The origin of an artifact shall not affect governance requirements.

Relationship to Implementation Reports

Implementation Reports should document significant AI participation when relevant to engineering traceability.

Compliance

Engineering work conforms when:

  • AI participation remains governed.
  • Human accountability is preserved.
  • Engineering artifacts remain reviewable.
  • Traceability is maintained.
  • Architecture Reviews remain mandatory.

Future Evolution

Future Standards may define:

  • Multi-Agent Collaboration
  • Agent Roles
  • Autonomous Engineering Limits
  • AI Quality Metrics
  • AI Capability Classification
  • Agent Certification
  • Human-AI Collaboration Patterns
