Definition
A Capability is a logical function a system or role must provide, described independently of how it is implemented. AAOE's reference architectures are described in terms of capabilities — such as the Knowledge Repository, Governance Services, or Traceability Engine — rather than specific technologies or products.
Why It Matters
Describing AAOE in terms of capabilities keeps the architecture technology-agnostic and vendor-neutral: organizations may implement, replace, or combine capabilities freely, as long as each capability's responsibility and its place in the architecture are preserved.
