Definition
Note: This exact phrase does not yet appear as a formally defined term in AAOE documentation. The closest established concept is organizational memory, used in GUIDE-0009 to describe what a well-recorded Architecture Decision Record becomes. This entry is a candidate for future refinement.
Provisionally: Engineering Memory refers to the preserved architectural and engineering reasoning — captured in ADRs, Discoveries, and Implementation Reports — that lets future engineers understand decisions made long before them.
Why It Matters
Architectural decisions often outlive the engineers who made them. Without preserved reasoning, future teams are forced to guess. Whether called "engineering memory" or "organizational memory," the underlying concept — reasoning that survives past the people who produced it — is central to how AAOE prevents institutional amnesia.
