AI Collaborator

Definition

Note: This term is used informally throughout the AAOE Guide as a synonym for an AI participating in engineering work. It does not yet have a single canonical definition distinct from the formally defined term AI Agent (see ARCH-0002). This entry is a candidate for future refinement rather than a settled definition.

Provisionally: an AI Collaborator is an AI system participating in engineering activities — implementation, analysis, review, documentation — as a partner to a human engineer, while the human retains intent, judgment, and accountability.

Why It Matters

AAOE treats AI as most valuable when engaged as a collaborative partner rather than a code generator. Neither humans nor AI are sufficient alone: humans provide intent, judgment, and accountability; AI provides speed, analysis, and implementation assistance.
